Understanding Fly Fishing Targets On Flowing Water

When it comes to fly fishing, the terminology can get a bit overwhelming if you let it. Here's the simple English scoop on some of the common terms used.

Understanding Whitewater Fly Fishing Targets

Fly fishing is many things to many people. For some, it's a zen way of interacting with nature. For others, it's a test of skill in competing with a sneaky little fish. For others, ballet dancing consists of technical moves and techniques to get the perfect throw from the perfect flying position which results in a perfect catch. For most people, it's just good clean fun. Whatever your preference, fly fishing has a specific language that you will need to learn.

Traditionally, fishing is done using flies in running waters such as a river or stream. There are differences in lake or ocean destinations, but they are in the minority. Given this fact, some of the terms associated with traditional fly fishing are explained below.

A "Venetian" is an area where fast moving water breaks over some solid structure, often rocks. Venice can be a great casting site for several reasons. Venice tends to be an area where bugs congregate. Where there are insects, there are fish. In particular, try to cast in areas downwind of the blockage as catches should be located there.

A "pond" is an area where fast flowing water enters a pool of deep water. Often found right after shotguns, the pool offers little exploration inside. However, it offers excellent views in areas with flowing water. More than a few species of fish that feed in places such as flowing water in a pond bring food and nutrients with them.

"Dead water" refers to an area where there is little or no current. This tends to happen in weird geographies, large rivers, or areas with flow issues. Dead water is rarely a good place to fish, so avoid it like the plague.

Although not a term in itself, vegetation growing in the water and shady coastal locations often make excellent hunting grounds. These sites provide a mixture of shade and

Feeders appreciated by fish. When it comes to shade, it's important to understand that fish are generally not worried about sunburn. Instead, they fear diving into bomber birds like the Osprey. Fish that float above a pool of water in direct sunlight tend to have a very short lifespan.

The above is clearly a small sampling of terms related to rivers and moving areas. However, you will at least know why so many hunters are talking about guns.
