Fly fishing is very different from fishing with a lure or worm bait. A fly fisherman uses an artificial fly made of stings of feathers, foam, leather, fur, thread, and other materials to try on a hook that makes it attractive to the type of fish he catches. Every fly fisherman has his own type of fly that he likes to buy and some of us like to tie our own flies. Fly tying is more of an art with some basic training that most people can learn in a short time.
Dry fishing is the best form of classic fishing. The artificial fly is cast so that it floats on the surface of the water. When the fly passes over the fish, it rises to the surface and strikes or catches the fly.
With a fly rod you will try to stop the fish from spitting the fly and exhausting it enough so that it can land in your net. With fly fishing, you'll see all the action as you cast the fly and fish with the fish for a shot. The fly is very visible on the surface for the fish. You'll see fish catching the fly at the surface, but trout and other fish feed underwater, so if you see fish coming to the surface, it's time to use a dry fly.
Drowned flies will sink below the surface of the water and may pass the fish, causing the fish to hit the fly,
Nymph fishing is very popular after flies lay their eggs in lakes or streams and hatch into nymphs. As the nymphs rise to the surface, the fish will pick them up. When they reach the surface, they will hatch into a fly.
During the imitation of hunting nymphs, we will be weighted to stay under the surface of the water. This will be more of a challenge for you as all the action takes place below the surface of the water and you won't be able to tell if a fish is about to strike.
Most fish can be caught on the fly, but the most common are trout, salmon, arctic char, and most anglerfish. In most areas trout are the most common and you will find them feeding mainly on small insects in shallow water. If you live on the coast, salmon fishing with a fly rod is very rewarding
Rewarding challenge. Tying a 30 or 40 pound salmon to a fly rod will allow you to practice running along the shore trying to play with the fish to land it.
The sport of fly fishing has grown in popularity over the years. Most people will agree that it's not just about catching fish, but about delivering the fly, skill and knowledge to the chase.
Some fly anglers consider fly fishing to be the holy grail of fishing. It's more comfortable and some say the time spent is better than the Golf. The sport of fly fishing sees people from all walks of life. Some say it is more environmentally friendly than other types of fishing because it harms fish less than other fishing methods.
The art of fly fishing will be in your blood and you will watch the water currents or the solitude of the ocean shores to catch your prey. Most anglers will catch and release if they are fly fishing.
